Some positive news from around NWLSD this week

If you see positive news stories occurring, take a picture and

send a short blurb about the event to Dustin Gehring @ dgehring@nwlsd.org

Struble

We are honored to present Mr. Lynn Caldwell with the PTA Friend of Children Award!  Mr. Lynn volunteers his time to direct traffic in the mornings and afternoons, and to assist students and staff in the cafeteria at lunch time.  He does these things every day!  What a tremendous support he is to our Struble family.  Thank you, Mr. Lynn!

Kindergarteners at Struble Elementary celebrated 100th day on February 11th!
With 100 days of learning “packed” in their brains, students in Mrs. Bickett’s, Mrs. Climer’s, Mrs. May’s/Ms. Joy’s, Mrs. Sipes, Mrs. Wright’s, and Mrs. Yeager’s classes used their 100th day passport to travel from room to room and participate in activities to explore the number 100.
Students counted and built with 100 objects and played a game to “Race to 100” with a partner.

Students counted cereal to create a 100th day necklace and teams worked together to create a tower using 100 cups.

They enjoyed counting groups of ten to create a 100th day snack and created a gumball machine project with 100 dots!

Students had a blast celebrating that they are 100 days smarter and are looking forward to all the learning we will do the rest of the year!

PRE

Mrs. Nichols grade students at PRE are reading buddies with kindergarten or first grade students.  The fifth graders meet with their buddies every other week to help them with reading and writing.  They are building relationships while helping develop literacy.  Our students love having reading buddies!

PRE 1st grade students and their families enjoyed a fun-filled Dr. Seuss-themed Title night! Students were able to enjoy the book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish on the smart board, make a fish craft, and make patterns with goldfish crackers!  Families were also able to enjoy a photo booth and cookies and win lots of fun raffle prizes. The turn out was awesome and it was so fun to see so many smiles!

HELC

We had a special guest come and visit HELC on Friday, March 15th! Mark Rozzio with the Marvelous Toy came to sing and dance with everyone. The students had a great time learning new songs, dancing along to some fun music and laughing at all the jokes! It was a great time!

Here are a few pictures from meeting our Northwest buddies helping us learn and gain some new first grade math skills in Mrs. Spray's class.  Mrs. Spray's class having fun celebrating 120 days of school!

CMS
On a separate note from our conversation yesterday, I was at UC with 3D print club yesterday.  They had a great time and represented Colerain Middle well by showcasing their 3D-Printed Inventions of the Jr. Clean, Puddle Protector and Eyeglass Wipers.  The pictures are attached in this drive.  I don't know why, but they upload as .heic pictures.  If you need any of them for anything and need different file types, just let me know.

PRMS

I want to highlight Mrs. Funk’s advisory who this morning surprised our cafeteria workers with breakfast in her room, served by her students. What a gesture and great way to say Thank You to our cafeteria worker who work so hard for us every day. Great job Stacy!
Mark Hensler (PRMS Music) was invited to speak at the Aronoff Center for the 2018-19 Broadway Season Announcement Event. Mr. Hensler spoke about participating in the Broadway Education program. Mr. Hensler has taken students from PRMS to see a touring show at the Aronoff Center every year since 2001. 40 students will be attending "On Your Feet" next week.

Last week PRMS received a gift from the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation in the form of two books for our library, one of Judge Jones and one on Oscar Robertson for Black History Month. These books were created by students in the National Youth Foundation program. Robert Hall was the gentleman who donated the books. I am including a picture as well. I told him I would pass along the information from the donation to you and maybe it could be included in the Notables.

Taste of Soul at NWHS
Some good news from the art department of Northwest High School.

Tia Greenlee, a junior at NWHS, had two digital paintings selected to compete at the state level of competition for the Governor's Youth Art Exhibition.

The Ohio Governor's Youth Art Exhibition, now in its forty-ninth year, is dedicated to the educational and artistic advancement of our talented young people in the state of Ohio. The exhibition is open to all of Ohio's 1,112 high schools, both public and private, chartered by the State of Ohio Department of Education. Our purpose is to provide all budding young artists of the state with opportunities to advance their talent, whether that be through scholarships or simply experiencing the process of entering their work in a competition. The exhibition is a valuable incentive for our young people; it encourages an appreciation for the arts throughout Ohio and reflects the fine quality of art instruction and talent which exist in our state.

Also, Northwest HS has four students whose work won at the regional level for the PTA Reflections Art Competition. Their work will travel to the state level of competition. The students are: Connor Harmon (photography), Tia Greenlee (visual art), Gabrielle Steward (visual art), and Hayley Kash (visual art). The theme this year was "Heroes Among Us".

CHS

Congratulations to the Colerain Criminal Justice - Crime Scene Investigation Team who are Regional Champions !!! The team consisting of Taylor Heffron, Hannah Boyer and Lindsey Bachman took first place in Columbus , Ohio this weekend at the Skills USA Regional Championships! The team will now move on to the State Championships in April in Columbus with a chance to go to Nationals !

All Juniors at Colerain High School took the ACT test on February 20th during the school day.  Over 425 students were in attendance and had a successful testing day. Thank you to the Cardinal Credit Union
for donating $1000 worth of prizes to students to be raffled off. Pictured are Presley Westrich winning a 50 inch TV and Kate Greenlee winning a chromebook.

I just wanted to take a quick minute to pass along some exciting news from the Criminal Justice Program here at Butler Tech / Colerain H.S.

This week we have Drone guru Matt King in class teaching the Senior Criminal Justice Cadets the Federal Aviator Drone class. Matt is a drone expert who works for Butler Tech and CEO of Drone Camps Inc. Matt stays busy at Butler Tech along with traveling the country teaching about drones so it is great that we could tie him down and bring him to our class for this instruction .

Next week, after completing instruction,  students will be able take the test to obtain their Federal Aviator Drone License 107. This test Costs around $150.00 each and Butler Tech has agreed to pay the costs for the test for each student.

Matt and others from Butler Tech have lobbied and successfully had ODE agree to include this certification for future Career Tech Industry Credentials. As far as we can tell,  we are the first in Ohio and possibly the Tri State area to have High School students obtain this certification and use this technology in a Criminal Justice Class room. I wanted to pas this along to give you a heads up as the story has started to gain some traction and in the event any news media would contact you about the story!

Claire Stamper to Take Part in Envision’s Junior National Young Leaders Conference

Cincinnati, Ohio – This summer, Claire Stamper from Cincinnati, Ohio will join outstanding middle school students from across the nation to take part in a unique academic and career oriented development experience, Junior National Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C.

Junior National Young Leaders Conference is one of the Envision family of programs (www.envisionexperience.com) that enable students to explore their interests and experience learning beyond the classroom.

Claire was nominated by her 7th grade show choir teacher at White Oak Middle School, Mrs. Randie Parks. Claire is involved in many extracurricular activities at White Oak Middle School such as drama club, show choir, and student council. She loves playing volleyball and basketball for her school and local community organizations. She is very goal oriented in every aspect of her life from academics, to the arts, to athletics . She aspires to one day help others improve their lives by pursuing a career in psychology. Claire is looking forward to hearing the inspirational speakers and learning new leadership skills from the program for her future.
“As an alumna of Envision myself, I am excited for Claire to meet, work, and collaborate with other high-aspiring students from across the country,” said Amanda Freitag Thomas, SVP for Envision. “Hands down, my favorite part of attending an Envision program was being with motivated students in an environment designed to help us challenge our assumptions, meet new people, and grow. Creating that same learning environment is a central focus for all of our programs. At Junior National Young Leaders Conference, students build the confidence and skills needed to excel in high school, college, and the workplace. They learn how to adapt to and communicate in new situations, to new challenges, and with new people, which, given how rapidly the world is changing due to technology and innovation, are essential skills for success.”

Since 1985, Envision programs have served more than 800,000 students in more than 145 countries, with programs designed to help students develop the leadership, scholarship and career skills needed to succeed in today’s competitive college and career landscape

CE
I am an executive board member on the Southwest Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics. We put on a mini-conference today at Scarlet Oaks. I just wanted to share a couple pictures with you. Amy Smith and Emily Upton from Colerain Elementary were two of our presenters and so was Jenny Mahlenkamp from Monfort Heights. We also had 15 teachers give up their Saturday morning and spend the morning with us learning about math topics. I thought you might want to put this out on Twitter.

WOMS
Students learned properties of circles and formulas to calculate area and circumference. They applied their knowledge to circles made by colored bubbles that popped on paper! It was a blast!
