Two students in the Northwest Local School district lead the annual City of Cincinnati MLK day march. This is now the 7th year that Dior Betts (7th grade @ Colerain Middle School) & Simeon Betts (5th grade @ Colerain Elementary School) have had the honor of carrying the banner for the City of Cincinnati's MLK Day March. Their photo is attached (credit to the Cincinnati Enquirer for the photo). They are pictured holding the banner.

In my PED classroom today (Wednesday, January 24th) we did a special event celebrating the Winter Olympics. We learned about the Olympics and how they are a collection of games that people all over the world compete in. Then, we held our own Winter Olympics! We had three events: Snowball Toss, Skiing Race and Snowboard Race. For the Snowball Toss, we threw a “snowball” as far as we could and then used blocks to measure how far we threw the snowball. For the Skiing Race, the students had “skis” (long blocks) underneath each foot and we counted how long it took for them to “ski” (scoot) on our “snow course” (long sheet of white paper). For the Snowboard Race, the students had a “snowboard” (long block) underneath one foot and we counted how long it took for them to “slide” on the snow course to the finish line. After everyone competed in each event, we held a medal ceremony for each event and awarded the bronze, silver and gold medals, just like in the real Olympics!
WOMS is very proud of five of it's 8th grade orchestra musicians who participated in the 2018 Jr. High Honors Orchestra District 14 event held at Princeton High School. The students rehearsed with students from 21 other middle schools under the direction of a guest conductor from Chicago. They rehearsed Friday, Jan.19 from 5:00 pm-9:00 pm and Saturday, Jan.20 from 8:30 am-3:00 pm. After over 10 hours of rehearsal, these students then performed a wonderful concert of very difficult music.
The students are left to right: Cassie Mikes, Josiah Jackson, Kelly Russo, Elijah Thacker and Bailey Magly.
A big SHOUT OUT to these fine musicians that represented our school proudly.
Weigel Elem
Students at Weigel Elementary had a chance to cash in their STEP dollars for needed school supplies and other fun items. The STEP Store is a financial literacy program sponsored by the UC Economics Department that helps teach students some of the choices they have with their money-the can spend, save, or donate. The program turns the donated STEP dollars that students earn throughout the quarter into real money at the end of the year. Our donations go to support pediatric cancer research. A big thanks to the folks from Al. Neyer and Cushman & Wakefield for not only funding our store but for also sending volunteers to assist our students with their transactions!
CMS
Congratulations to the CMS students who were selected to participate in the 2018 OMEA Junior High Honors Orchestra! Outstanding strings players from area middle schools are selected by their directors to represent their school in a weekend of rigorous, exciting music making. This year the event took place at Princeton High School’s Matthews Auditorium on January 19 & 20.
Under the direction of guest conductor Patrick Pearson, our students experienced a top notch rehearsal and performance. The program included: Engines of Resistance, The Legend of Duffy’s Cut, Medieval Legend, Canon in B Muse, and Egmont Overture.

Butler Tech
The Butler Tech Sports Medicine and Exercise Science Program Seniors completed Staff Fitness Assessments at the Beginning of January. The students worked with all NWLSD staff members to assess their body composition with height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, percent body fat, body mass index, and waist-to-hip ratio, their flexibility with a sit-and-reach test, their cardiovascular endurance with a step-test, their muscular strength with a push-up test, and muscular endurance with a curl-up test. Thank you for all of the staff members who attended!!
The linked story about Precision Machinery was on Cincinnati.com. Julian was highlighted in the story. Julian is a junior at NWHS, and has already received 12 job offers. He ALWAYS has a positive attitude and outlook.

CHS
The “CARDS” award stands for CARING, ACTIVE, RESPONSIBLE,DEDICATED STUDENTS. Today we took the time to recognize the students nominated for their positive achievements in attendance, grades, citizenship, attitude, behavior, and any other positive student action that the student has done to make him/her stand out. Teachers recognized approximately 50 students and their parents, and enjoyed a lite breakfast with them. It was great to hear about all the wonderful things students are doing to make Colerain a more positive place!
